Job Term: Part Time - 28 hours per week (2 Week Rota)
Location: Kingston

Week 1: Tuesday - Friday
Week 2: Wednesday - Saturday (including evening shift on Thursday)

Please note this role will include regular evening & weekend work where service requires.

About the role
Kingston Heritage Service primarily manages two sites; Kingston History Centre and Kingston Museum. This role will be based at Kingston History Centre, home to the borough’s local history and archive collections.

The Borough Archivist will manage Kingston History Centre’s archive collections (which are primarily stored offsite). They will develop the collection, ensure its security and preservation and oversee its cataloguing to the required standards. They will seek to make the archives of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames accessible and relevant to the widest possible audience. This will in part be achieved by building relationships with internal and external stakeholders, championing archives to demonstrate their importance and value.

About you
We are looking for an enthusiastic, confident and experienced archivist to manage, conserve, provide and promote access to Kingston History Centre’s archive collections. Reporting to the Heritage Service’s Team Leader, the post holder will be a part of developing and delivering a vibrant, exciting Heritage Service that has Kingston’s heritage and collections at the heart of it. This role will provide ideal opportunities for an archivist seeking new challenges in further developing processes and embedding new systems, working in a visitor environment and promoting the the importance of Kingston’s archive to teams across the council, local communities, partners and stakeholders.

You will be responsible for managing Kingston History Centre’s archive collections (which are primarily stored offsite). Within this you will be required to develop the collection, ensure its security and preservation and oversee its cataloguing to the required standards. The collection includes records of the former Kingston Magistrates’ Court (public records), official borough records dating back to 1208 and a substantial number of deposited collections including those of Hillcroft College and Kingstonian Football Club. You will seek to make the archives of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames accessible and relevant to the widest possible audience. This will in part be achieved by building relationships with internal and external stakeholders, providing archive related support and advice, championing archives to demonstrate their importance and value.
The successful candidate will have a post-graduate in Archives and Records Management (or equivalent) and have post qualification experience in the management of records and archives. You will have a good knowledge of current legislation and standards for caring for archives. Prior experience of cataloguing to international cataloguing standards (such as ISAD(G)) and familiarity with CALM is required. Knowledge of developing or working with digital preservation solutions would be advantageous.

Ideally you will have experience working in a public environment, with knowledge of working with local authority records. You’ll have excellent people skills and be able to communicate clearly with a variety of stakeholders, as well as presenting ideas and research. You’ll also have a passion for contributing to the development of the service through new ideas and ways of working.

Overall you will have a proactive approach to working on your own and as part of a team and be able to manage your own workload efficiently.
